Pianist Karen Kelly will entertain with music from the Golden Age—Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael, and Gershwin—with a sampling of the Beatles and classics like “Misty” and “Moon River.”
Kelly recently performed at the Swan Bar jazz club in Paris. “It was a magnificent experience,” she said. Locally, she has played at the Cape Cod Museum of Art, the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, and the Cotuit Center for the Arts. She also entertains at nursing homes, yacht clubs and weddings.
Kelly came to performing by a nontraditional route. She started out as a French teacher and used to bring her keyboard to class to teach French through singing. “You can really learn a lot through music,” she said. Later, as a cook at a nursing home, she began playing piano to entertain the residents, and now performs throughout the Cape.
In the main gallery from May 5 to June 10 is “Harmony and Balance: A Taste of the Japanese Tea Ceremony,” an exhibit of art inspired by the principles of the tea ceremony: harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility. Works include sumi-e paintings, pottery, metal bowls and vases, traditional Japanese floral arrangements, Japanese paper creations, kimono-inspired glass, Japanese brushes, and more. Original color and black-and-white prints of landscapes and people by Evan Charney are in the upper-level gallery.
Wine will be served by representatives from the Grain & Vine Spirit Shoppe of Hyannis, which provides a different selection of fine wines each month. Servers are happy to share their knowledge and enthusiasm about the wines.
Wine and Music Wednesday is held the third Wednesday of the month year-round. The arts center is at 4404 Route 28 in Cotuit. For more information, visit ArtsOnTheCape.org or call 508- 508-428-0669.
