Where: Cotuit Center for the Arts, 4044 Route 28, Cotuit
Cotuit Center for the Arts' new exhibits, "Harmony and Balance: The Japanese Tea Ceremony" and "Evan Charney: Woodcuts and Screen Prints," open Saturday, May 5, with a reception from 5 to 7 PM.
"Harmony and Balance" provides a look at some traditional and nontraditional aspects of the ancient tea ceremony: the preparation of the tea, utensils used in the ceremony, calligraphy, ikebana (flower arranging), kimonos, architecture of gardens and structures, and more. The exhibit focuses on the central principles of the tea ceremony: harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility, as interpreted by contemporary local artists.
Charney's black-and-white and color woodcuts, linoleum block prints, wood engravings, screen prints, and combination works depict summer landscapes, winter scenes, birds, people, especially children, and pets, both on the Cape and in Sanibel Island, Florida. Featured also are two woodcuts of Japanese kabuki dancers.
