Jimmy Tingle's American Dream Comes to the Cape
By: iO Staff, July 9, 2012
Jimmy Tingle - Stand-up comedian, writer, activist, Harvard alum and now a documentary filmmaker, this Cambridge-based funny man pokes holes in the American Dream with his latest cinematic offering.
It's no secret that comedian Jimmy Tingle spends his summers in Wellfleet. But he's not just taking a vacation.
The comedian, writer, Harvard alumn and documentary filmmaker has a Thursday night residency at Wellfleet Preservation Hall throughout July and will also present a special stand-up show at Cotuit Center for the Arts on Thursday, July 12.
Both events include a screening of his documentary, Jimmy Tingle’s American Dream (2010, 73 minutes) followed by the man himself performing stand-up afterward (save those rotten tomatoes). The Cotuit event is part of the Woods Hole Film Festival Best of the Fest series and starts at 7 PM; the Wellfleet shows start at 8 PM.
Tickets for both shows are $25. Reservations for the Cotuit performance are recommended and may be purchased at ArtsOnTheCape.com or by calling 508-428-0669.
With a career spanning 30 years, Tingle is regarded as one of the top social and political humorists in America. Born and raised in Cambridge, the social, political and economic diversity of that city laid the groundwork for his development as a performer and satirist.
Tingle has worked as a stand-up comic, producer, writer, actor, filmmaker, and commentator. He recently returned to school, earning a master’s degree from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, and gave the graduate address at Harvard’s 2010 commencement ceremony.
In American Dream, Tingle reflects on individual meanings of the American Dream with friends, family, entertainers, historians, social critics, and total strangers, weaving in commentary on his stand-up career.
Included are interviews with Robert Altman, Howard Zinn, Al Franken, Janeane Garafalo, columnist Margery Egan, Sister Lena Divey, Jimmy’s mother, Frances, and more.
Directed by Vincent Straggas, the film features music by Willy Nelson, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Neighborhoods, and Jimmy Tingle himself on harmonica.
Don't miss this chance to see Jimmy Tingle live and in the flesh close to home!
