Live Band Karaoke Contest to Find Cape Cod's Next Rock Star
By: iO Staff , February 20, 2013
Do you sing AC/DC songs in your shower every morning? Are you that guy (or girl) who belts out the lyrics to Steely Dan's "Babylon Sisters" in your car while stuck at a red light in traffic? Have you ever daydreamed of singing "Walk This Way" alongside Steven Tyler and Joe Perry in front of thousands of screaming fans at the TD Garden in Boston?
If this is you, then you're in luck. Starting tonight and running through June, the Cape is looking for its next great rock star in a series of weekly karaoke competitons where YOU get to front for a live band.
The contest, organized by DJ Alvzie, lets those of any talent level perform every Wednesday evening at The Beach House Restaurant in North Falmouth, and every Sunday night at The Duck Inn Pub in Hyannis. Each venue will have its own weekly winner who will earn prizes and qualify for the right to move on to the quarterfinals the first weekend in June.
At the end there can only be one winner who will be crowned Cape Cod's official rock star to go along with $2,000 in prize money, and potentially a new career in the music industry.
So how does it work? You will front for a live band made up of musicians playing in the best current and former bands in the region - Syndicate, Dune Billy-All Stars and 57 Heavy to name a few - that have come together to form The Cape Cod All-Star Band. With the talent level in the room, even if they don't know the song, they should be able to pick it up quickly.
Unlike regular karaoke there are no monitors to help you keep track of where you are in the song though there will be an iPad available to reference should the need arise. And just in case you falter, your bandmates will be there to pick you up.
The judges include DJ Alvzie, who will be spinning music in between live sets, and members of the band. The crowd also has 50 percent of the say so make sure to bring friends to cheer you on. Creativity, enthusiasm, appearance (costumes are encouraged) and talent will determine just how far you can go.
Should you be one of the chosen few to make it past the first round you can continue to come back every week to hone your skills until the quarterfinals begin in June at The Duck Inn. The Hyannis bar will also serve as the host for the semifinals before the finals move to the Beach House to see who rocks the hardest on Cape Cod.
